Calgary, AB – February 1, 2007 – Kimberley Alpine Resort recently hosted its Junior Freeski competition, the first of its kind at the Resort, and the first of the 2007 RCR Junior Freeski Series. The event attracted youth between the ages of 7-16 from Western Canada and the Northwestern US for the competition.
The event provided the opportunity for families to share in the excitement of the sport of freeskiing, with a number of categories featuring multiple entries with siblings. Further, competitors and their friends and families celebrated Saturday evening where they reviewed video footage of the day’s events at a Freeski Popcorn Party.
The girls’ category winners of the two-day event included: Shannon Gunning, ages 7-11 category; and Megan Gunning, ages 12-15 category. For the boys, first place went to Jack Iles, ages 7-11 category; North Parker, ages 12-15 category; and Michael Saunders, ages 16-18 category.
The competitors took on a long course on runs Fuzzy and Flush on the backside of Kimberley Alpine Resort. Sixty competitors took part in the event.
The next Junior Freeski Event will take place at Lake Louise Mountain Resort with the Lake Louise Junior Big Mountain Challenge. February 17–18, 2007. Registration is live at www.skircr.com/compete, and filling fast. The event entry fee is $50, and competitors also receive 20% off lift tickets for the event dates. Helmets are mandatory. The Fernie Junior Freeski will take place on March 10 and 11. There will be a combined category prize for competitors that participate in all three events.
